October 24th is National Food Day and we want to honor their mission to encourage healthy eating and locally grown produce by celebrating one of the state’s most beloved autumnal crops. In fact, this year’s first BIG EASY PEEL DAY is in partnership with The French Market…come down to Washington Artillery Park that day to participate! FULL DETAILS HERE!
We will have plenty of satsumas for sale at our Farmers Market, plus cooking demonstrations and talks about this delicious homegrown fruit!
FRENCH MARKET’S FIRST ANNUAL SATSUMA CELEBRATION in partnership with SOUTHERN FOOD AND BEVERAGE MUSEUM
12 p.m. Satsuma peeling contest. We will have a kids’ contest and an adult contest. Yes, you can eat what you peel! Free to enter.Winner will receive a satsuma painting by local artist Kimberly Parker, represented at the French Market’s Dutch Alley Artists Co-op. Arrive by 11:30 a.m. to register.
1:00-1:30 p.m. Satsuma juggling lessons with Juggler George from Carl Mack Presents. Complimentary satsumas while supplies last. Local circus arts teachers and performers will teach juggling with our fruit of the day, the beloved satsuma!
2 p.m. Edible Schoolyard demonstrates and offers samples of TANGY SATSUMA SLAW!
Edible Schoolyard NOLA involves students and the school community in growing, harvesting, preparing and enjoying food together as a means of awakening their senses, cultivating an environment that promotes a sense of pride and responsibility for our land and natural resources, and developing a love of fresh, seasonal foods.
3 p.m. Feed Me Eat Pretty “Drinking Seasonally and Deliciously” Satsuma Cocktail/Mocktail Demonstration and Sampling
Come experience the versatility and deliciousness of one of our most prized local ingredients, the Satsuma, in the creation of delicious cocktails and mocktails! Feed Me Eat Pretty owner and chef, Emily Marquis Vanlandingham, will showcase her Satsuma Syrup collection in a variety of ways that will leave you “Drinking Seasonally and Deliciously”.
4 p.m. Ryan Hughes of Purloo demonstrates Satsuma Mignonette with Louisiana oysters plus Candied Satsuma
