FRENCH MARKET BARTENDER & WAITERS RACE, PART OF BASTILLE DAY NOLA

Registration for the race has closed.

It’s the fastest, funniest,  Frenchiest foot race you’ll ever see!  Based on the Parisian tradition, this now worldwide sensation of waiters speedwalking while balancing drinks and food on waiters trays has returned to the French Quarter in what is now the 6th annual race at the French Market! The race is Sunday July 12th at 4 p.m. with entertainment starting at 2 p.m. at the Farmers Market stage, and live music and awards ceremony near the finish line at St. Phillip and Decatur Street (Dutch Alley Performance Pavilion).

Route is a 4 block speedwalking race down Decatur Street riverside, from Washington Artillery Park (across from Jackson Square) to St. Phillip Street (Joan of Arc statue).  Racers will race in heats of 10 at a time, for 3 races, then a fourth and final race.30 bartenders and waiters will compete on a first come, first served registration basis. LIMIT TWO WORKERS PER ESTABLISHMENT, PLEASE.Prizes include gift certificates to local restaurants, items from the Tales of the Cocktail festival, French Market retail gifts, and much more!

FRENCH MARKET BARTENDER & WAITERS RACE RULES:

  1. Absolutely no running. This is strictly a speedwalking race. Runners will be immediately disqualified.
  2. No spilling of items.
  3. Once the race begins, no touching of items on the tray is permitted.
  4. Only one hand may be used to support the tray; no switching of hands during race. Tray must be balanced from underneath.
  5. No bodily contact with other racers once the race has begun.
  6. No unsportsmanlike conduct of any kind will be permitted.
  7. The first person to cross the finish line WHO HAS NOT SPILLED ANY ITEMS is the winner.
  8. In addition to on-site volunteers and race captains walking along the race to ensure all rules are followed, the judges will review videotape of the race captured by Iphones to determine if there were any rules broken. If any rules were broken, there will be immediate disqualification.
  9. NOTE: If no one crossing the finish line has spilled any liquid, the winners will be determined by measuring the liquid per glass and the one with the most liquid still in the cup wins.

 ROUTE: Down Decatur Street from Jackson Square to the Joan of Arc statue (3 block race,  riverside)

A Taste of the Opera for Bastille Day!

New Orleans Opera Association performs French opera selections

3:45 p.m. Washington Artillery Park (across from Jackson Square)

Red Hot Brass Band performs at Starting Line

4:00 p.m. RACE BEGINS!!  700 Decatur Street in front of Washington Artillery Park, near Café du Monde

Contestants speedwalk down Decatur for 3 blocks to St. Phillip Street, near the Joan of Arc statue. Contestants end at designated finish line to place trays for judges.

4:30 p.m.  Red Hot Brass Band performs at Dutch Alley Performance Pavilion

4:45 p.m.   Awards Ceremony: Winners Announced!

5:00 p.m. Event ends

 

PRIZES: 

$200 for First Place, $100 for Second Place, $50 for Third Place

Plus trophies for each winner (Including Runner Up) and gift certificates from local establishments, French organizations, and other goodies. ALL PARTICIPANTS RECEIVE A FRENCH MARKET GOODIE BAG WITH APRONS, TSHIRTS, AND MORE!
